Cast of characters

Right now I've got my bettas, a ball python, and a baby praying mantis.  Obviously the bettas are the focus of the blog, but I figured I'd list the rest, too, as I'm sure they'll make appearances.

First and foremost, my most recent addition, and the reason for starting this blog in the first place.

This is Grim, my rescue.  So named because he looks like he has a constant frown on his face.  He looks grumpy as hell.  But despite his rough appearance, he's a happy boy.

I think he's a half moon, but severe fin rot has destroyed so much of his tail, I can't tell for sure.  We'll have to see what grows back.

I have no idea how old he is.  I know his previous owner had him for between one year and two, and I'm assuming he was a pet store buy as an adult, so I'm guessing he's 2-3.

Next are the halfmoon twins, Nephthys and Osiris, named for brother and sister Egyptian deities.  Nephthys is the Egyptian goddess of death, drowning, and the Nile.  Osiris is the Egyptian god of death, the underworld, reincarnation, water, and vegetation.

They've been together since they were little, and up until recently, Neph would sometimes slip into his side of the tank (a situation that has been recently fixed, and Neph is pissed about that).  Osiris is very aggressive with other males, but very gentle and mild with his sister.  They seem to enjoy each other's company in the divided 10 gallon tank where they live.

Getting pictures of them is difficult, so last time I did a 100% water change, I decided to get pictures while they were in their temp containers.  I keep every cup that bettas come in, either to test water, or if something is wrong with their tank and they need a temporary home with a lid while I fix it.

And they're great for photo ops.

My youngest is Illuyanka, a halfmoon dragonscale (supposedly, I don't know for sure.  He was also a rescue from someone who bought him, kept him for a week, then decided he was too much work).  He's the friendliest and the most interested in me.  Every time I come in the room, Illy wakes up and jumps all over the place, wanting attention.

And then I've got the ball python, Karana.  She actually belongs to my 5-year-old daughter, and stays in her bedroom.  The spawn loves Karana, and helps me do everything (except feeding, she just watches during that.  Karana is a very eager feeder and the spawn's fingers are little).

She's a Mojave morph, about a year and a half old (based on her size, we don't know her exact age).

And last but not least, we've got Spear, the praying mantis nymph.  He was born the beginning of May, he's a Chinese mantis, and he loves to eat.  We won't know for sure if he's a boy or girl until the next few sheds, but for now I just call him a boy.  He also lives in my daughter's room, along with Grim.

So these are my babies.  Gotta love them all.
